We’ve just completed a significant upgrade to Lara Chat for all Max subscribers.

Grok 4.1 has been replaced with Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite (the latest high-efficiency model).

Why the change?

After extensive testing, Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite delivers a much better overall experience for the vast majority of conversations in Lara Chat:

  • Significantly faster responses — often 2–3x lower latency, making chats feel truly instant.
  • Much better cost-efficiency — allowing us to deliver higher quality and more usage within the same Max plan limits.
  • Stronger balanced performance — excellent instruction following, tool use, multilingual support, and multimodal capabilities (text, image, audio, video, PDF).
  • Improved reliability for everyday tasks like coding assistance, research, creative work, data analysis, and agentic workflows.

While Grok 4.1 had strengths in certain creative or uncensored scenarios, Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite outperforms it in speed, consistency, reasoning quality for high-volume use, and overall value — which aligns perfectly with what most Max users need from Lara.

Quick Comparison (Grok 4.1 vs Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite)

Aspect Grok 4.1 Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Winner
Speed Good Excellent (up to 330+ tokens/s) Gemini
Cost Efficiency Higher cost Dramatically lower Gemini
Reasoning Quality Strong Stronger in most benchmarks Gemini
Latency Moderate Very low Gemini
Context Window Large 1M tokens Tie
Multimodal Good Excellent (improved audio/video) Gemini
Everyday Reliability Solid Significantly more consistent Gemini

What this means for you

  • Snappier, more responsive conversations
  • Ability to handle more complex or longer sessions without hitting limits as quickly
  • Better performance across coding, research, creative tasks, and real-time web features we added recently
  • Future-proofing: Google is rapidly iterating on the Gemini family, so expect even stronger improvements in the coming months (better reasoning, more efficient tool use, and enhanced multimodal features)

This switch is part of our ongoing commitment to giving Max users the best possible AI experience without increasing prices.

Thank you for being part of the ReadyTools journey. We’re incredibly excited about how much smarter, faster, and more useful Lara is becoming.
