Private and public files in Vault

Understand the difference between private Vault files and public shared files.

1 min read118 wordsUpdated May 20, 2026

Vault files are private by default. A private file is meant to be accessed only by the owner or by ReadyTools features that have permission to use it.

A public file has a public share link. After a public link is created, anyone with that link can open the public preview page.

  • Private means the file stays inside your account access flow.
  • Public means Vault creates a shareable URL under /v/{slug}.
  • The preview and information modals show whether a file is public or private.

Important

Only make a file public if it is safe for people with the link to view it.
