Your username is one of the most important parts of your profile. It appears in your public profile link, which is how others find you. That’s why it’s important to choose a name that suits you and complies with the rules.
Changing Your Username Step by Step
- Open the Settings page.
- Click on the Public tab in the left-hand menu.
- Find the Username field.
- Enter your new username.
- Click the Save button.
After saving, the new username takes effect immediately, and your profile link will be updated with it.
Rules and Restrictions
- Only lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), and underscores (_) are allowed.
- The username cannot start or end with an underscore.
- Multiple consecutive underscores are not allowed.
- The username can be up to 20 characters long.
- Every username must be unique.
- You can only change your username once every 30 days.
Tips for Choosing a Good Username
- Choose a short and memorable name.
- Avoid complex punctuation marks – they’re not allowed anyway.
- If a name is taken, try a slight variation, such as adding a number.
- For a business profile, consider using your brand or company name.
- For a personal profile, you can use your real name, nickname, or a creative identifier.
- Keep in mind that your name will also appear in links (e.g., readytools.co/profile/username).
Common Mistakes
- Entering a name that’s already taken – you’ll need to choose a new one.
- Using a name that’s too long – always check it’s under 20 characters.
- Using disallowed characters – only letters, numbers, and underscores are allowed.
- Using multiple consecutive underscores (e.g., ___test). This is not allowed.
- Forgetting that you can only change your username once every 30 days. If you’ve already changed it, you’ll need to wait.
What Happens to the Old Username?
Once you save your new username, the old one becomes unavailable. Other users may claim it later, so you may not be able to revert to it if you change your mind.
If You Can’t Change Your Username
You might find that the button remains grayed out or you receive an error message. This usually means the chosen name is not allowed, is already in use, or the 30-day waiting period hasn’t passed.
